Lung Conditions
Dr Tsoka provides specialist assessment and management across a wide range of adult lung and respiratory conditions.
Asthma
Chronic inflammatory airway disease, defined by a history of variable respiratory symptoms such as wheezing, shortness of breath, chest tightness and variable expiratory airflow limitation. Patient-tailored, evidence-based treatment plans for asthma control including flare prevention and medication review.
Emphysema / COPD
Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is a common, preventable and treatable disease characterised by persistent respiratory symptoms such as shortness of breath, cough and/or sputum production. The main risk factor is tobacco smoking, but biomass fuel exposure and air pollution may also contribute. Evidence-based treatment plans for COPD management, preventing exacerbations and assisting with smoking cessation.
Sleep Apnoea
Sleep apnoea is a disorder characterised by repetitive pauses in breathing during sleep caused by airway occlusion (obstructive sleep apnoea) or altered control of breathing (central sleep apnoea). If you snore loudly or still feel tired after a full night's sleep, it may be worth getting assessed.
Lung Cancer Screening
Lung cancer remains the leading cause of cancer-related deaths in southern Africa. Early detection in high-risk individuals, such as smokers, is imperative with chest scans for screening.
Pulmonary Hypertension
Pulmonary hypertension (PH) is a chronic, progressive condition characterised by high blood pressure in the blood vessels of the lungs, affecting the right side of the heart. Accurate evaluation of symptoms with specialised investigations helps with accurate management.
Pulmonary Embolism
A sudden blood clot in the lungs is a life-threatening condition, which may originate from the deep veins in the legs. Accurate evaluation, management and prevention is key to ongoing health.
Respiratory Failure / Critical Care Medicine
Advanced respiratory conditions that require ventilation in an ICU setting.
Tuberculosis
Tuberculosis (TB) is a chronic infectious disease caused by bacteria, which usually attack the lungs (pulmonary TB), but can affect the kidneys, brain or spine. A persistent cough for more than 2 weeks associated with night sweats, fever and weight loss is suggestive. Diagnosis and prevention is key in our South African population.
Interstitial Lung Disease
Interstitial lung disease (ILD) is an umbrella term for more than 200 chronic lung disorders characterised by inflammation, scarring (pulmonary fibrosis) or damage to the surrounding lung tissue. Progressive breathlessness and a dry, hacking cough could be suggestive, and accurate diagnosis is important for further care. Evaluation of Chronic COVID lung disease included.
Occupational Lung Disease
This condition falls under interstitial lung diseases but is primarily caused by harmful substances found in the workplace, such as dust, chemicals, gases, fumes and long-term exposure to hazardous materials like asbestos. Careful history taking is important in this setting.
Bronchiectasis
Bronchiectasis is a lung condition that causes chronic productive cough and persistent lung infections, due to abnormal dilation of the airways. Causes include cystic fibrosis, infections and previous pulmonary tuberculosis. Accurate diagnosis is imperative for goal-directed therapy.
Pleural Disease
A potential space that can be compromised by inflammation, infection, thickening or excessive air/fluid accumulation. Accurate evaluation with history taking is imperative for long term management.
